Family History Resources for Kids
It can be very challenging to get kids interested in their family history! To some, it may just feel like a bunch of black and white photos and dry stories about people who don't matter anymore. Hopefully my books help bring some of those ancestors to life!
Here are some more resources that my kids love -
I Am My Ancestors
This is a wonderful rhyming book that takes kids on an adventure through many different parts of family history - cultures, geography, religions, food, languages, and many more! The rhyming is intelligent and is as fun to read as Dr. Seuss.
Turning Little Hearts: Over 80 Activities for Children to Connect with their Ancestors
When my 7-year old daughter first got ahold of this book, she was in heaven. It is completely full of fun activities from coloring pages to interview assignments with living relatives. The other day my daughter came into the room and rolled a homemade dice and then asked me the question that came up - what was my most embarrassing moment? It sparked a great conversation, and came straight out of this excellent book.
Family Search Center Olympics
Did you know that many communities have a free family history center sponsored by Family Search? I've brought several youth and adult groups to the local family history center where they offer a fun online activity that explores many of the features of Family Search. They even hand out little 'medals' for how much of the challenge you complete. This is excellent for ages 10+.
